Floating restaurant and bar opens in Dublin Docklands

The Cill Airne, Dublin Dockland’s very first floating bar and restaurant, is now open for business, just in time for the busy Christmas period. The historic ship has been extensively renovated and will be based along the quayside at North Wall Quay.

The ship will house two new restaurants, Quay 16 and Blue River Bistro. The Blue River Bistro is located in the refurbished deck of the Cill Airne, with unrivalled views of the waterfront and Docklands, and will offer casual dining with a capacity of 120. In the New Year, Quay 16, which is located below deck, will offer fine dining for up to 60 guests.

The opening of the Cill Airne follows the Docklands Authority’s call for water-based businesses that will enliven the River Liffey. The initiative is part of the Dockland Authority’s River Regeneration Strategy, which is focused on returning the River Liffey to centre of Dublin life and has already seen the launch of business ventures such as the Liffey Voyage tour service, Dublin City Moorings, the Liffey Ferry and the purchase of the replica famine ship, the Jeanie Johnson.

The ship is owned by Dublin businessmen Larry Crowe, Brian Flannery and Robin Payne, who also own well known restaurants, One Pico, Bleu and Nancy Hands.

The Cill Airne was commissioned by the Irish Government in July 1961 and was one of the very last riveted ships to be built in Europe. Designed to carry over 1,000 passengers, the Cill Airne suffered from the collapse of the liner trade following the increase in airline traffic and was handed to the Maritime College as a training vessel for naval cadets. The Maritime College’s move to a new building with mock up engine room and sailing simulators resulted in the Cill Airne becoming obsolete and she was placed up for auction by the College.

David Higgins, Director of Finance, Docklands Authority, said "The Cill Airne will further enhance the Docklands area and ensure that the River Liffey will be the heartbeat of Dublin once more. We look forward to making further announcements on new water-based attractions that will appeal to Dubliners and visitors alike."

Et?salat, literally Communications) is a UAE-based telecommunications services provider, currently operating in 18 countries across Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Emirates Telecommunications Corporation is its legal name. As of November 2009, Etisalat is the 13th largest mobile network operator in the world, with a total customer base of 100 million.

On January 31, 2010, Etisalat reported net revenue of USD .4 billion (AED 30.831 billion) and net profits of USD .407 billion (AED 8.836 billion).

The Etisalat Tower 2 is a 33-floor tower in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The tower has a total structural height of 185 m (607 ft). Construction of the Etisalat Tower 2 was completed in 2007. The most notable aspect of the tower is that it has a spherical structure at the top, similar to a golf ball. The cladding of the tower follows the Etisalat guidelines, in that it uses the same materials as most of the company’s buildings. All Etisalat buildings, including Etisalat Tower 1, Sharjah Etisalat Tower, Ajman Etisalat Tower, Al Ain Etisalat Tower and the Etisalat Headquarters in Abu Dhabi, have the same spherical structure on the top.
